ABSTRACT. In the intoductory paper of the series the study area of Russian Altai is defined. Comments on its physiography and bryophyte composition of the main types of vegetation are provided. History of the bryological exploration of Altai is discussed. Preliminary list of Altaian mosses is given, with the altitudinal range and frequency for each species.
