Abstract. The secondary structure of the nuclear ITS1 transcript in pleurocarpous mosses has one hairpin which is remarkably stable over families of Hypnales and Hookeriales, but is different in Ptychomniales and basal pleurocarps. The structure and transformation modes in this hairpin are described and its possible usage as a phylogenetic marker is discussed.
