ABSTRACT. The South American cladoceran Alona monacantha Sars, 1901 is redescribed from G.O. Sars’ type material. Detailed morphology of this species is provided for the first time. Analysis of morphology shows that A. monacantha is closely related to Paleoarctic Alona rectangula Sars, 1862. Distribution of A. monacantha and its position within the genus are discussed.
