ABSTRACT. A camel spider, Rhagodes melanopygus (Walter, 1889) (Solifugae: Rhagodidae), discovered in the Kyzylkum Desert, is reported from Uzbekistan for the first time. Using molecular data from the mtDNA COI gene marker (DNA barcoding), phylogenetic and biogeographic relationships are demonstrated among several geographically dispersed populations of this species and, to some extent, among some representatives of this family. The distribution of R. melanopygus is analyzed using literature and our own data (results are shown on the map); the find in Uzbekistan represents the northernmost record for the family Rhagodidae. An expanded diagnosis and morphological redescription of this species are presented, based on both new material and museum collections (including type specimens from Turkmenistan). The ecological features and habitat confinement of R. melanopygus are discussed. A number of nomenclatural remarks are given regarding the nomenclatural types of R. melanopygus and the synonymy of R. melanopygus nigricans Birula, 1905.
