ABSTRACT. This new book on Diptera draws reader’s attention to a survey of one of the most numerous and evolutionary advanced group of insects. Its author discusses the origin and development of the order Diptera, shows allied groups, and gives brief characteristics of the main dipteran families according to contemporary views. The book, written as a mini-encyclopedia in a style rarely used in popular science publications, provides readers with proper factual knowledge in an understandable form. High quality colour illustrations complement the information provided on dipteran diversity, and allows reader to take a closer look at numerous insects that are often to be met in nature or in the home. N.E. Vikhrev’s “Diptera: an Introduction to Flies” is an outstanding phenomenon among entomological popular science publications and will undoubtedly find grateful readers.
