ABSTRACT. This investigation examines the distribution patterns of chironomids in the Arctic. A brief analysis of the current state of knowledge in various Arctic regions is provided. A new approach to analysing the latitudinal distribution of freshwater aquatic organisms, using chironomids as an example, is proposed, and new terminology for its description, based on the thermal characteristics of water bodies, has been developed. 22 latitudinal distribution patterns for non-biting midges in the Arctic have been identified.

KEY WORDS: Chironomids, range, distribution, fauna, Arctic.
