ABSTRACT. A sketch of life, teaching activity and work of Russian zoologist and embryologist Yuri Alexeevich Zakhvatkin (1941 – 2022) is provided. Embryological studies of Yu.A. Zakhvatkin are shown to be connected with works of prominent Russian biologist Vladimir N. Beklemishev. Modern molecular evidences of synzoospore hypothesis by Alexei A. Zakhvatkin, father of Yuri A. Zakhvatkin, are discussed. Impact of the theory of promorphology of embryogeneses by Yuri A. Zakhvatkin on the development of synzoospore theory is illustrated.
KEY WORDS: zoology, embryology, origin of multicellularity, synzoospore, promorphology.
