ABSTRACT. A review of arachnological research in the Russian Empire from the first paper published in 1770 is presented. The given period covers the first and a part of the second phases of the faunistic-taxonomic studies of spiders. By species diversity, spiders constitute the vast majority of arachnids (except for mites and ticks) known from the region at hand; therefore, the majority of works are devoted to this arachnid order. Two revolutions in spider taxonomy are described. Interim results of arachnological studies in the mid-nineteenth century, by the 1890s and by 1917 are summarised.

KEY WORDS: Russia, spiders, Aranei, Araneae, scorpions, Scorpiones, camel spiders, Solifugae, false scorpions, Pseudoscorpiones, harvestmen, Opiliones.
